I ordered a straight run from one of the hatcheries. I have a silkie pair which I will keep but the extra roos in the straight run that I dont keep or sell are getting processed. I would actually like to mix the silkies in hopes of getting a bigger chicken with black skin is that possible?

Probably, but if you go to chinese market with a oversized silkie, they will think it is a rooster and thus no good for soup. LOL

why do they only eat hens???

It may be regional, but they do eat both. Just according to my mom's philosophy, a hen used to make medicinal soups are more healing... yeah... I don't believe it... but it's just culture. I say silkie tastes just like any old other chicken..but I've only eaten it as part of soup containing things that make the house stink and smell like feet... yeah.... it's like one of those things like eating hen ovaries to increase fertility...

Eastern medicine does have it's merits, but just like western medicine that can over do things... so can eastern medicine.

The concentration of the pigment proteins are so little, I don't know if they really do that much for you or affect the flavor as it's in the connective tissues.

There was some study saying that the levels of pigment are elevated (duh), but that they haven't found any thing "special" about it.

I've eaten silkie. Grilled and baked them.. was good either way. Only difference is, it's harder to tell when they're done.. especially with birds with darker skin and more solidly colored flesh than in purplechicken's picture.

They are awesome served up at halloween parties! A lot of people are very nervous about trying them though....

BTW I got to disagree about roosters(any roosters)! Old roosters have a sour taste to them, yuck! It was not due to any bias on my part- had never heard of anything about roosters or hens tasting better etc.. it just hit the palate. Old hens are my favorite.. really love them grilled then shredded up for tacos, MM!

I think it is something like how some people claim heritage turkey has more flavor than store butterballs. (it does seem that way to me too..)

I remember my dad refering to "eating loser and San Miguel" at the cockfights in the PI. Now, I'm sure THAT was some stringy chicken....

Are all silkies bantam?
