Do they "need" a rooster?

As some know my beautiful Roo Dude died on Thursday evening. I have been contemplating whether to get a new rooster for them. Maybe they are just as happy without all the jumping on them that a rooster does.

What do you think about it? I posted before but did not get down to the rooster or no rooster question.

What are the advantages and disadvantages? What are your experiences?

I want to do whatever is best for my 9 hens.

Some people say yes and some say no. I like to have a roo as an extra eye for the girls. And it looks more complete to me. Roos show them food and "keep them in line" as I like to think of it. Some say it is more stress on the hens due to maiting, but I think they are fine. I say go for it if you can.

I agree with Silkiechicken.....I think the girls will be happy with another roo. Besides...maybe you will want to hatch a few out for yourself!??? I have 13 Roos...and would be very sad to look out there at a bunch of "lost" ladies.

I like the protection roo's give my flock, it has come in handy more than once.

Pecking amongst the hens is almost nonexistant because the roo won't tolerate it.

My roo's notice when there is a hawk near much faster than I do and warn the hens.

I will be on the lookout for one about 6 months old then. Not easy to find.
