Getting some chicks in couple days an was wandering if they will need like a night light or not I have one of those heat plate coming so wasn’t planning on using a heat lamp but will use both if needed obviously the lamp really high not to over heat them

I think it depends how old they are. If they are a day old, I would leave the lamp on at night and put it a little high above the brooder so it doesn't overheat, even with the heat pads.

I have a heat plate and it heats up great- sometimes too much, even, depending on the ambient room temperature. There's no need for additional heat with mine. I leave on a dim night light so they can see when they get up and move. Mine are four weeks old and are roosting on a bar in their brooder and on top of the heat plate. I have the light on in case they fall off.

No, don't use a light a night. It is better for the chicks to have a natural day and night cycle. If you are using a heat plate, you don't need a heat lamp. At night if they aren't using the heat plate, just push them under. They will learn how to use it on their own after a few days and nights.
