Maybe a dumb question and this might not be the right section of the forums, but I'm going to have to get my chicks at a farm store with a limited selection available due to COVID panic. I want to avoid ending up with any red chickens (apologies to the lovers of RIRs, etc. but I really do NOT like the look of a red chicken).

Can I be confident that a yellow chick, even if mislabeled, won't turn red on me as it grows up?

The only breed I can think of that has yellow chick down but matures to a red-like color is a salmon Faverolles. Those would be easy to identify with the cheek fluff, feathered legs and 5 toes.

But if the feed store only gets a small selection then their yellow chicks would probably be one of the more common breeds - white Leghorns, white Rocks, Delawares or light Brahmas. I expect there is a good chance they will have some black chicks (Australorps, black sex links), another option to avoid red.

Thanks. I wanted to know so I'd have more options if I am picking chicks from an "assorted pullets" bin. :)

Would a yellow EE chick be likely to grow up white too?
Not necessarily. I got a yellow EE chick and he grew up to be orangy and white. I thought he would be white. He's still quite handsome.

NO. These are my "Rainbow Pullets", April 10 of this year.

and these are the same "rainbow pullets", a few days ago (together with some Pekin ducks).

- fair confident they are NHR, New Hampshire Reds.

This is right after they dumped the automatic dog watering bowl.

We got our chicks from 2 different feed stores this year. In one batch we got 5 ee's, one of which was yellow and now white. But also got 10 buff orpingtons and now 4 of them are reddish. So all I can say is...good luck!
