Do you believe in defending you and yours?

I think you made a mistake in chasing those folks. You said they had a gun. What if at some point they decided to not be chased any more and started firing at you? Your best option is to call the police and leave it at that. Nothing will probably result from the call but you have kept yourself and family safe from harm. As for predators: There are two types of creatures on my property. Mine and Targets.

That's your privilege to think it was a mistake. Had they tried shooting at me, I'd have backed off. I was right behind them, and could see them clearly. I wanted to speak to them, but they weren't man enough to stop and apologize. They shot toward my dad's house, killed a deer in the road with my dad's land on both sides, so indirectly they were hunting our land. I'd do it again tonight if need be. We live way out in the country and a call to 911 will get the sheriff here in 45 minutes to an hour. Yeah, that would have done lots of good.

Im a big time believer in defending what is yours. Animals, property and whatever else belongs to you. Unfortunately I live in California where you can break into someones house, trip and fall over a statue in the hallway and sue the owner of the house. Im a gun owner and if someones breaks into my house Im with you, there will be a mess to clean up. Its just unfortunate that we have to be afraid to defend ourselves. I hope and pray that I never have to even get to that point but dangit Im not going to be a victim. I lost a cat of 15 years to someones stray Doberman. Watson was 2 feet away from my van and didnt even have time to run away from the dog. The dog came down a 200 foot driveway, into my yard and just attacked my cat, no warning or anything. I have since battoned down the hatches, my yard is completely enclosed and the fence is two feet taller now. If I EVER see any animal on my property that I think is going to harm one of my animals it will be SHOT DEAD. The same goes for any other form of vermin.......

I wish it was legal to kill a bird of prey that is killing your stock. But, I am not gonna risk federal charges over chickens. Any other predators that come on to my property are gonna be dealt with as though they are after my animals. This almost always means deadly force.

It amazes me how many people make the claim "They're just doing what wild animals do" or, they say something like "They were here before us". It's OK for the chicken do die an agonizing, horrible death by a predator but, don't even consider killing the predator? Ludicrous! Chickens only deserve to be victims and killed. And, predators are given a pass because their legacy is that of a killer! If the chicken dies, generations of meat and eggs will never exist. If the predator dies, generations of chicken killers will never exist.

If being here first was a sensible argument, then donate your land back to the nearest Native American tribe.

My runs and coops are built very well. I do not believe in sacrificing my animals on the alter of some animal-lover philosophy. No one loves their animals more than I do. That's exactly why I don't tolerate killers to kill them.

I will do whatever it takes. First and foremost, I try to be as discouraging as possible. I don't have much to fear from predators that can't get in in the first place. That's the ultimate win/win situation, I think.

Hawks are easier to foil than a lot of other predators, I think. You can build them out and don't have to worry about them tearing your coop apart.

Raccoons, possums, weasles, rats, and coyotes are instant trap and kill.

Domestic animals will be returned to their owners, taken to the pound, or shot depending on what's needed.

I don't haul water & feed 365 days a year to my livestock to have it eaten by some over rated bird in the sky or have my eggs eaten by a snake. Nope I protect them everyday. I read well I'll let the neighbors dog eat one but that's all. Not me I let my neighbors know ahead of time your dog comes on my property . OK I'LL STOP THERE> I guess reality for me vs a lot of folks here at BYC is I live in the country on a farm & its a whole lot different here than in the burb. Different life style I guess.I mean snakes in the coop it happens all the time. Hawks are everywhere. I've probably seen 10 bobcats tons of coons etc. I can't afford to loose my livestock.
