We have no chickens currently but I have raised them before. I'm thinking of getting us meat and egg layers. I know we won't be able to process ourselves..but does anyone know how much a butcher may charge to butcher for us? We are thinking of getting 25 Cornish crosses.

Butchering isn't too hard. Do you maybe have some friends/neighbors that could help out? You should at least look into it a bit before completely ruling it out and spending money on a butcher.

I have no idea on prices, as I've always done my own.

If you don't think you can do the butchering yourselves, I would suggest you find someone to do the processing for you before you ever get your chickens. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a bunch of chickens that you don't know what to do with. Not every locker plant will process chickens. There are several places around here (within 45 miles or so) where you can take your pigs, cows, or deer for processing, but won't do chickens. There was one about 75 miles from here, but this year they quit doing birds.

Why not contact the local 4-H and offer a donation in exchange for a couple of the local kids to give you a lesson and help you the first time around.
