I very unexpectedly fell in love with chickendom, having had no chicken experiences apart from vague and distant childhood memories of a short-lived parental experiment with silkies. I am still new upon this road. I have yet to experience a hatchling and I have yet to butcher or eat one of mine. The time will come, I am sure. Are they pets? I don't know. Neither pet nor livestock. They are providers: of eggs, of chicks, of wonder and laughter and stress and work.

I agree! Hatched another roo after I butchered the mean one and he's as sweet as ever.

Pets for the eggs. Cost is not a factor with any animal we've had. Their enjoyment and companionship for me.
