Do you ever encounter people that don't know where eggs come from?

My young nephews came for a visit this past spring and were so excited about the hens and the eggs. They loved to collect them and they did have some questions about where eggs came from so I gave them a 'kid' size description of the process.

Well anyway.......the first show and tell back at school they showed the eggs from the chickens and explained a bit about them. The teacher called their mom and asked where they learned such disgusting misinformation! Oh well.

Now I just have to explain to my neighbor that those stalks in my garden are brussel sprouts. She doesn't believe me.

As for the nurses on a previous post who think fertile eggs are unhealthful, I would like to ask them to explain to me why, if that were the case, fertile eggs are often available in health food stores and cost more than the infertile ones.

`Cause silly people are willing pay more for them, duh

. The only good reason to pay more for fertilized eggs is to hatch them.

Well, I guess if you thought you were supporting a better chicken living environment, that would be a decent reason too. My dad originally thought I was being cruel to my hens denying them a rooster. I think they are happier without one to be honest. Maybe I should post a rooster pinup in their nest box.

I love showing all my animals to young guest, just recently a little girl visited our farm, and asked if she could see a "baby egg" so I reached into the nest box and pulled one out. she squealed with delight, and said "awwww! Its soooo cute! can I pet it?" I didn't have the heart to tell her I was going to eat it.

My mom actually slapped the crap out of me when my 4 year old told her that I'd let him process a quail. She the informed me that I'm teaching him to become a psychopath and that before I know it I'll come in the kitchen to find him eating the cat.

So far, no kitty dinners for us. He does have a particular fondness for quail, and any egg he gathers himself he wants to eat asap.

I still wanna know how you pasteurize a fresh egg. Or why you would want to. I am going to call Safeway and see what they have to say. Ought to make for an interesting day. But then, I am easily amused.

Your mother shouldn't be slapping a grown person. If your son saw your mom treat you so disrespectfully that will go further in damaging him then humanely killing his own food.

I don't think eggs are either pasteurized or irradiated. How would you pasteurize a whole egg in the shell anyway? I think eggs that are sold bulk by the gallon for commercial use are pasteurized. As for irradiation, it is not a bad thing. It is too bad it is not used more often in the meat industry. Salmonella and e coli contamination occur on the outside of the carcass. If carcasses were irradiated going down the line it would just about eliminate the e coli recalls. One reason it is not done is that people do not understand the difference between radiation and irradiation and would think they would be eating radioactive meat. In other words it is a public relations nightmare.

My brother has a friend that works in a large egg factory nearby. I am getting him to set up an appointment for me to tour the facility so I can find out firsthand what is and what is not done to eggs. That way when I open my mouth I will know for sure what I am talking about.

I do like my home grown eggs, but the eggs that are in the store are not necessarily stale. After all, several BYC members have even gotten them to hatch.

I haven't had the pleasure of running into anyone with a phobia against home grown eggs. If I do, I am going to ask them exactly why they think whatever it is they think. Like how they think store bought eggs get there and how they are handled from chicken to market, and on what they are basing their opinion. I would really like to know.

As for the nurses on a previous post who think fertile eggs are unhealthful, I would like to ask them to explain to me why, if that were the case, fertile eggs are often available in health food stores and cost more than the infertile ones.

Well, perhaps the PP should have put an IMO in there somewhere, but I could go on the internet and find about 1000 things to support each side. That's the downside of the internet info explosion. People are posting things they see as factual, but unless we investigate carefully the credentials of the authors, it's very difficult to know what's true out there, and it's not always easy to find the time to do that. I used to live outside a real hub of nonsense where a very clever cabal of information nazis put out all kinds of nonsense, and people are believing it all, hook line and sinker, so yeah, I'm REAL careful. People are too too willing to be lead.

I have NOT looked at your article Ladyhawke, but until I do, I'm taking BOTH your statements as opinion. (this is not meant at all as an insult to either of you! please don't take offense? )

No offense taken.

If in IMHO if people would “read” this information, they would find out that it is part of the “Congressional Record” and is used in the making of laws and regulations.

Public Citizen is a national, nonprofit consumer advocacy organization founded in 1971 to represent consumer interests in Congress, the executive branch and the courts.

Moreover, since I do not just believe anything I read until I investigate it….. because I am extremely skeptical individual. I have followed this organization’s endeavors and legal proceedings for over 20 years and have found no falsehoods.

And…and, I have a science background and last but not least……….I personally know where chickens and eggs come from.

What takes most people twenty years to find out through regular channels or under reported news items (too late) I find out right away with this type of information. Ta..da!
