Do you feed mash or pellets?

I currently feed starter crumbles because that is what the local feed store suggested. I have been reading a couple chicken books & they suggest mash over pellets. Is it cheaper, easier, or better for them?

Also, I have one hen of laying age & the rest are young... should I feel them all started crumbles for now?

For baby chicks I use crumbles and mash. For adults I use pellets and layer mash.

I use mash for the little babies, crumbles for the older babies and layer crumbles for the big birds.

What does mash look like? Is it wet? Does it have a special feeder?

I started using pellets when my chickens were ready for their layer feed. Less waste and as long as they are getting fed, my chickens don't care what the food looks like.
