Do you get chicken mites on you often?

I thought mites were "species specific"...meaning chicken mites wouldn't get on people. Guess that's not so...
Mites are "species specific" the mites you found crawling on you were only looking for the chicken they misplaced. Don't sweat it.

Mostly true, but does not apply to ordinary garden variety chiggers. Only reason my flock has not had any of those that we know of is that there is not a speck of vegetation in their 1900 sq ft run.

I also suspect that chiggers are high on the chickens' list of prey species.

Let's put it like this, "If I were a chigger and I lived near a chicken pen, I would be looking for safer digs."

I had a lot of black ants all over two young Red Oak trees in my run. In a week of turning my young chooks out there 5 years ago, I never saw another black ant again. In fact that is the most insect-free zone on our property. You are far more likely to find an ant in our kitchen than in our chicken run!

A good friend of mine with decades of chicken experience says that sulfur is good to dust chickens in for a mite and/or lice infestation.

Sulphur is good for mites. Works well for dogs and cats. Ditto 10% Sevin dust. Have read on this site that many use Diatomaceous Earth to dust their birds, and they mix it with ordinary dirt/dust wherever their chooks take dust baths too. Has to be the food grade stuff tho. The stuff used for swimming pools has a dangerous toxin added.

So I'm going to try citrus oil and dog 'flea and tick' shampoo on the mites my flock has, but I'm wondering does the shampoo affect the eggs at all? Can I still continue to eat them or should have a specific time of throwing them out? Every piece of advice is important! :)

Sounds as if it will work. I have used orange peel oil to kill Harlequin Bugs and caterpillars in my veggie garden. Likely a lot safer than Sevin dust for the chooks and for you regarding the eggs. I have used 10% Sevin dust to keep fleas and ticks off of our dogs for years.
