Do you guys clip wings?

I have done so in the past and this is done to prevent birds from flying effectively out of a pen or fencing enclosure. One side is usually clipped so that flight is ineffectual...this does not mean they cannot still fly a little and achieve a good hop onto a roost or gate. Any persistent birds are usually given what I call the "prison cut", which means both wings are trimmed as far as one can.

I don't need to clip anymore but it has been effective for me.

Nope. I don't.

Clipping wings is done for people who live in places like cities where they cannot or for some reason don't cover their runs, and thus the chickens may fly out.

I myself "free range" my girls on 3 acres of stuff that is fenced in, but they never fly over. . . What's the need?

I don't, but then again I have LF brahmas. They run at a very rapid pace with the wings flapping like they're trying to fly but there's no way for them to get their fat butts off the ground.

I have a 6' privacy fence. I don't think my girls realize there is an "outside." They're usually pretty thrilled just to get out of the run and have access to the back yard, so I've never had to worry. Sometimes they "fly" for short distances, but not very high or very far.

So I've never clipped.

I had to when they were younger, because they would fly over the back chain link fence and then not know how to get back in. They never tried flying over the wooden '6 fence we have on the sides however

Yup that. They would fly out and not know how to get back in ----- can't have them doing that coz the neighbors on the other side of the fence now have a Boxer mix pup that looooves to chase chickens (but fortunately doesn't seem to know how to dig) and the one wing clip didn't quit the escaping, so we had to go in for what the other poster called the "prison cut" on the Leghorn girls.
They don't fly out anymore though.

okay, so i live in the city

lol. we are in the middle of building a pen. we are planning on putting a roof on (we have stinkin possum) it will be a wire roof. so should i go through the hassle of slipping wings? or just let them be? they fly around my room hahaha, and i won't want them wondering around in the yard, they will pretty much be confined to the pen. it will be 10ftx20ft. and about 4 ft tall. just 2 duckies and a 3rd later
