Do you guys open doors for girls?

When I was younger it always annoyed me when a man opened a door for me, seemed like he thought I couldn't do it myself (I'm from backwoods NC where that is still pretty common)

As I have gotten older, I recognize it as manners, courtesy, and a show of respect.

I've moved to VA and I can really tell the difference in the manners from here to there.

That being said, my DH and I open doors for each other equally. Whoever gets to it first will hold the door open for the person following as a courtesy. This is done for strangers also.

If I go in a door first and someone is coming in behind me, I hold it open for them so they don't have the unpleasant and rather rude experience of it closing in their face. I also try to remember to say Thank you, regardless of who does it.

I dislike it intensely when men do that. It's obnoxious, and it puts me in an awkward position. Either I can thank them for something I didn't want and act like a wee shrinking violet, or I can open the other door for myself if it's double doors and let them end up with hurt feelings.
Which one depends on how patient I'm feeling.
Silly tradition, needs to fade away.

Yes, it's "just good manners", but it's based on a flawed principle. I'm not a fan of tradition for tradition's sake.
Also, it's different from holding the door for the person behind you. I do that for anyone, why slam a door on a person?

This thread is starting to go off topic but that never stopped me in the past.

In my opinion, holding a door for anyone, is just good manners. It's the same thing as smiling or saying "good morning" to someone you pass in the hallway.

If I hold a door for someone I'd hardly call it obnoxious. Some seem to like it while others are caught off guard. I can tell by body language a few don't like it or dismiss it.

I'll usually open my car door for a woman, regardless of my relationship with her, when she's getting in my truck. Call me old fashioned.

Sometimes common sense needs to rule too. Jumping ahead of a line of women to hold the door is cute for church but for the door to a mall is a bit much.

To clarify, I'm talking about when a man jumps around me to grab the door. That's what's obnoxious, and very different from holding a door to avoid slamming it on the person behind you.

I learn a lot from body language also. More seem to be caught 'off gaurd' than anything. My kids have been taught to hold the door for anybody.

Not getting a "thank you" can Pi$$ me off! But I shrug it off and will still hold a door open anytime.

Around here, it would be considered more rude not to hold a door for someone. I always hold the door for someone behind me, but since I'm a woman, most people just thank me, take the door from me and let me go first.

It's a 50/50 chance for a guy to hold open a door around here. I find that the 50 who do mostly reside out in the country, and the 50 who don't mostly reside in Dallas. (Note the "mostly", occasionally they switch.)

As a girl, I hold the door for anyone who needs it or doesn't. If I reach the door and I know you're coming, I'll at least wait and hold it open until your hand grabs the handle. It's courtesy.

C'mon folks, where ya rushing off to? Stop to watch the clouds every now and then.

When my boys were small I would take them out on Sundays and individually at times to teach them social skills like holding open doors for ladies....basically just how to treat a lady. I don't think that is something that should ever die out and I don't find it old-fashioned at all. I do, however, think it is something that is not being taught much to children now days, which is sad.

When we moved here and my boys started in the local high school, the reports I got back on my children from my co-workers was that their teen girls were simply amazed at how polite my boys were. Seems holding open doors and letting a lady go first is not so common at their school.

My guys still open doors for girls....especially their mother!
