This is a great question! I've got my cooped all framed right now and I'm trying to decide on things like roosts, brood boxes and feeding/watering.
So far the ideas that I have used are:
-A "trap door" along the floor of one wall to sweep out litter.
-Part of the coop sectioned off for storing food and egg access without traipsing through poop.
-Flood light outside the coop.
-Lots of windows for natural light and ventilation.
-Coop is positioned up-hill from the flower garden so that run-off will be "fertile."
That's all I can think of and I don't think it really addresses your question but I'm really curious what other people have to say.

your advice is very helpful and I am going to use it! We live in sunny southern AZ, so the winters aren't bad...but I am happy to hear a few tell me about the more windows the better...... It makes sense, I just hadn't given it much thought! I will adjust the plans ASAP!
