Do you have IDEAL bantam cochins?

I am working on getting a Bantam Cochin line going to show along with my Silkies, and since Ideal has Bantam Lavender Cochins, I'm seriously thinking about just buying 10 to 20 of their chicks just to get started. I realize type will be lacking, but I can cross them to quality blacks later on, and start the line the same way I did my Silkies.

However Ideal doesn't have a picture of their stock on their website. Does anyone have Ideal Bantam Cochin stock, and if so can you post pictures so I can get an Idea of what to expect? I'd like to see the lavender variety specifically, but any variety will do.

Chris..you have nice Silkies and you put alot of work & love into them so....Im not so sure you would be digging the Ideal Cochins.. but you do have the know how and to turn them around to where they need to be.
Like most Lav projects right now thye are just getting started and the Lavs you see for sale on BYC are probably the Ideal ones, too.

My DD shows Silkies, DS Frizzles and he wanted to make a Lav Frizzle so we got some from Ideal.
You are right, they arent very typey. I got rid of all but a pair of black Frizzles , they werent that bad, and kept the best of the Lavs .The rest Lav and otherwise really had no cushions and the Frizzles had wide spaced feathers and not so much feathering on the legs.
Plus, they are better now, but the Lavs seemed kinda mean, not your typical Cochins.
My DS called them the blue devils.

Most everything needs work when it comes to Lavender! LOL But you have to start somewhere I guess.

I've sent a few emails looking for a Lav Cochin Cockeral and if I can find one then I'll get some black bantam cochins since they are easier to come by.

As long as the color genetics are there, I think I could work with them. I've had to learn patience with the Lavender Silkies, so these wouldn't be a far stretch.

I'm just going to have to weight the pros and cons of each way of starting out.

I want to revisit this a little...

I was once told, when I was breeding Japanese, that offspring obtain TYPE from the female, and COLOR from the male. Does this hold any truth?

Which leads me to my second question...

If I WERE to obtain a good quality black cochin, and some Ideal lavenders, would I want to cross a Black Male to a Lav Female, or vica versa? Or does it matter?

Sandhill's black cochins are very nice, I had a great looking hen. I sold her becouse I didn't have a rooster. a friend of mine bought her also she was very friendly.

I have a lavender banty Cochin hen from Ideal. We adore her! She is wonderful, the only banty in a flock of about 40 standards. That little girl holds her own, let me tell you, but she is very friendly, sweet and a very good layer, though the eggs are the size of a malted milk ball, LOL. As far as quality of the bird, she is actually small, even for a bantam and Shadow's foot feathering isn't as great as you'd really want.

I also have a Lavender bantam Cochin. I got her at a swap, but she is likely from Ideal. Not too typey, and minimal feathering on her feet, but she is very sweet (comes running over when I'm outside and asks to be picked up; she loves riding on my shoulder!) I've just hatched her first chick (bred to a frizzle) so we'll see how the next generation is. (I'm not working on a Lav line, just curious.)

I cant believe Ideal is selling those as cochins. Looks like they took and lavender OE game and crossed it to a cochin. Isn't that false advertising? That worries me about ordering any breed from them. Someone else showed me pics of thier GL Sebright OE ordered from them and they were not even laced and huge. I have seen a few breeds they advertise that I gave some interest and was thinking about placeing an order. Does any of thier chickens look like what they are supposed too? You may have saved me some money.
