Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Lydia, you could also try some deep litter in your coop and create heat in that way, while also keeping your coop cleaner without the use of poop boards. A well cultured deep litter can be a source of protein, allows good bacteria to grow while inhibiting the more harmful pathogens, and can insulate the floor of the coop and keep birds warmer in the winter, keeps down flies in the summer. The best part is that it cuts the labor of coop care down to about nil.

I got to thinking about this...if heating keeping your chickens IN the coop, that will increase the amount of fecal matter in the coop, which increases humidity and ammonia in that coop too. No bueno.

I really try to get my birds to deposit more poop in the coop, so winter has my bonus months! Mine free range all the time, so most of the good poop is outside and just nighttime deposits in the litter. Since I want a lot of poop to mix with my litter and there to attract bugs, to make for extra food for the flock, I like it when the birds poop in the coop. It's a different approach, I know, than anyone is used to using, but deep litter is just wood chips and leaves without the poop. Need the poop in the coop!

Mine free range too, and I DLM my coops..I need compost and lots of it, lol. A 10k square foot garden eats compost.

But I was more thinking in reference to people saying the birds like being heated. Well, if you heat your coop, and the birds stay in as a result, and your ventilation is lacking, you could end up with birds with problems secondary to the humidity and ammonia from the poop the birds put in the coop instead of outside. It is something to really think about if you are considering heating your coop.
