Do you know how much MSG you consume?

I almost posted on the MSG subject asking if anyone else had a problem eating out. We have a Monday routine of messing around the stores 50 miles from us. Almost every time I eat out, I am sick later that day and don't feel well for 2 or 3 more days. Finally we began packing a lunch--now no more sickness. Since I didn't have the problem at home, it has to be MSG or something in the food. It doesn't matter whether it is fast food or buffet. We have no idea how the food is handled or what is in it when we eat away from home.

MSG causes migraines in a lot of people. It is often listed on labels as a "natural flavor enhancer." It actually doesn't have a good taste. It is a chemical that causes your tast buds to enlarge so you taste the other stuff more. That allows the the food manufacturers to but in less of the more expensive real seasonings.

all - MSG has been proven time and again to not be harmful to people. The "bad effects" people feel are mostly mental. Sure, a few people might have some sort of reaction, but that is the same with all foods! Read up on it. the MSG hype is very largely a myth.

Did you know that tomatoes contain a large amount of naturally occurring MSG and that is why they taste so good and a bit of tomato paste enhances the flavor of many dishes? Please don't be so concerned. MSG is not a harmful substance and is naturally occurring, and it does most definitely positively enhance flavor.

You should talk to a doctor that specializes in migraines. MSG can cause the arteries in your brain to expand the same way it expands your taste buds. When the arteries expand it causes the wrong amount of serotonin to be released. Improper amounts of serotonin are interpreted by the brain as pain. Ask any neurologist or headache specialist. It's not hype. I can easily imagine that studies finding it harmless might be sponsored by food companies that have found it more profitable to use msg than it is to put more real falvorings in their products.

read under "health concerns:"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate

multiple double-blind studies show that there is no difference in symptoms in people who were given MSG and people who were given a placebo. The only heath problems that can be scientifically proven are when massive amounts are given to people without food, and even then it's a small percentage who are effected at all. When given with food, there is no statistical difference. Trust me, it is hype. Excellent, widespread, extremely hard to dispel hype, but hype none the less. It has been common scientific knowledge for many years now that MSG is not at all harmful.
