do you line your run with gravel or sand or just leave the dirt?

Devora,

I am fairly certain the run is not yet fully installed. I am assuming the 'run' will come into existence when the four posts holding that deck up get fenced in.

RHI, is this correct?

I'm so sorry there devora...I seriously had no clue what you were talking about. I thought you were poking fun and being facetious with me.

The magic of internet communications.

The lawn is Fairway Grass; it is a cultivar of grass that is intended to hold up under high traffic and high useage. It's holding up very good with all the attention that the flock is giving it...No?

I will admit that I'm useing more water than I have in previous years...I'm not sure if this is the chickens or the dry spring that we are having here in Colorado

Devora - you made me laugh out loud.. which made my co-worker turn around, sneer a little and say "You're doing that chicken-chat thing again, aren't you!"

She's just jealous because she doesn't get chicken-TV at her house!

Canesisters - you made ME laugh!!! My coworkers think i'm crazy. No one understands but us - chickens are addicting!!!! We will be finishing our protected run this weekend and I will post pictures for comments/suggestions. I would like to see everyone else's too!

I have gotten lots of good ideas, mthanks to everyone that responded. I think I am going to leave the dirt and add grass clippings and leaves in the fall and just keep the yard raked. The run is covered so it will stay relatively dry.
