I lock everything unless I'm in and out of the door every few minutes carrying stuff or something. I live in a really safe area now with basically nothing to worry about but I used to live in more urban areas. In one of those prior places, I apparently didn't turn the lock completely one night and woke up to some knocking about, which I thought was one of my pets, so I got up grumbling about it and then heard the front door close. Fortunately that was the person leaving not staying. After that I slept in the front room for a while on the couch an realized the doors in my complex were tried almost nightly but never was able to get over there fast enough to catch the culprit who would just walk past them all and try them in sequence. Glad I now live in an area where I will never deal with that sort of thing again but it's just not worth the risk so I still double check the locks each night before I go to bed.

I have hurricane proof windows and back French doors. I had trouble with my back door lock once and the man they sent out stated someone had tried to kick the doors in, more than once. So yes I lock up, sometimes I sleep with my upstairs bedroom windows open. But you would have to put an extension ladder against the outside wall to get in. We don't keep anything of value in the cars, but still lock them.
My next door neighbor has had his back door kicked in a number of times. He has Hugh privacy shrubs all around his back yard. So no one can see what is happening in his back yard. We have pretty good privacy in our back yard, but not enough to keep trying to kick in a door that you are not going to get into.
We have people (probably kids) who go around in the middle of the night and check car doors and sometimes front doors.

When I was a kid, my dad had a business next door to our small, rural home. Although he always said, "A lock will only keep an honest man out," we did lock our doors at night.

When I lived in a nearby town, someone broke into the house while we were at the movies and took some valuable electronic equipment. And, the doors were locked, proving my dad's theory.

I now live alone in the country and had a situation where someone I knew -- who was struggling with some emotional problems -- would show up in the middle of the night, enter the garage, walk up to the back door.

I got into the habit of ALWAYS locking up everything, Even if I was only going outdoors for a few minutes, I locked the house behind me and carried the key. That situation is now resolved, but I still lock everything because it-- irrationally, I guess, makes me feel safer.
