Do you name all of your chicks?

We had to wait until they were older and had some distinctions. Still, it was hard even then! Our easter eggers are all different enough that they are easy to tell apart. The Rhode Island reds...well, they didn't get named until they were almost a year old. LoL Couldn't keep them straight!

We opted not to name them. For one, some of them are hard to differentiate. And two, these are dual purpose birds that will be harvested for meat when the time comes. I think, especially with kids in the house, its a confusing message that is made harder when treating them like pets. So, we try not to treat them like pets. We treat them with respect, but not affection.

Only my 6wk old barnyard mixes have set names. Mercury (pullet, named after Freddie Mercury because she's had a set of lungs on her from the start) & Memnoch (cockerel, was originally named Frost for the silver stripe he had down his back as a chick, but renamed after the devil character in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles because he's been making some freaky noises lately as he's trying to figure out how to crow). I have 3 more, 1 2wk old & 2 1wk olds, that just have nicknames right now while I wait to see if they're pullets or cockerels.

I lucked out that all the chicks I have are either very distinctive in look or are completely different breeds. Makes it easier on me. :)

Well, we got our new chicks today. My 6 year old named "his" golden laced Wyandotte Goldie. And my 4 year old named "his" Buff Orpington Chickeny. Me, my husband and my 9 year old son are still coming up with ours. Though I think my son is leaning toward Ginnie (Weasley) because Hermione sounds "too long".

Our 2 Buff Orpingtons are Wanda & Lois, the 4 Black Sex Links are Hibisca (our granddaughter said Hibiscus sounds like a boy's name ;)), Daisy, Rose & Bloom.

I have 8 chickens of four different breeds. I have 2 blue andalusians, 2 easter eggers, 2 white marans, and 2 salmon faverolles. I was lucky enough that most of them are easy to tell apart. The blue andalusians are 2 different colors (one blue, one splash). The easter eggers have the same pattern but one is black and white and the other is brown and tan. I have a feeling that the salmon faverolles will give me trouble in the future but as of now, one is much smaller and has less feathers than the other. The white marans are very difficult to tell apart though. Elsa is just slightly larger (and it's very hard to see). The only difference is that Elsa has a few more feathers growing on her head than Betty Lou. When they are older, I will have to purchase bird bands for their legs (basically just a bracelet). This will help me tell them apart by the color of their bands.

We have 6 chicks that are all different breeds, so it's easy to tell them apart. I have 4 children, but my youngest is too young to name one lol, so the three boys each got to name a chick and then my husband and I named the other three. The chocolate orpington is Puffy, cuckoo marans is Chicky, light brahma is Lightening Speed, rhodebar olive egger is Elphaba (from Wicked, since she has green legs), cream legbar is Ethel because she looks like a little old woman, and blue orpington is Frank because we think he's a boy. :)
