I freely admit I haven't been in farming as long as others, so it's distinctly possible I just haven't reached that point yet. The chickens came part way through my childhood and we didn't eat any of them until I came to realize in my adulthood that there shouldn't be any guilt to giving them a good life and then one bad day to end it. I do not fault anyone for naming and loving the birds they intend to rehome, or even the birds they intend to eat, but it's not something I can do easily, myself.
Took me a long time to get here. :hugs

I don't name them. My dear wife names her favorites but I can't keep them straight. The only one I call by name is Tapebox. She once made and sat a nest in a cardboard box where we keep half-used rolls of all sorts of tape. I had to walk by that box a half-dozen every day for almost a month and came to recognize the shape of her comb. Now she is the most fearless and most aggresive of a dozen free-ranging hens when it comes time to broadcast their daily raton.

I name the ones I can tell apart 😂 I have leghorns, wyandottes, Rhode island red/leghorn crosses and Easter eggers..you can't really tell leghorns apart..one of the leghorns had to umm..."go for a walk" the other day. Poor baby..she was two and a half. I tried my best but she had some fertility issues and I didnt want her to be in any more pain.

I let the kids name our first flock, and boy did we have some real hoots! The daughter (now of mature age to contribute "real" names) named the second flock.

I have named all my chickens but they are not pets to me. Even though I do thank them and encourage them if I see them in the nest box. A good farmer treats their animals with respect or the farmer wouldn't survive long. If I must, I will cull them, but haven't butchered anyone yet. I have been researching meat chickens and will not name those. My family farm has never named their animals but that is changing now that my cousins are running it more. It's weird to see cows with names on their ear tags in addition to numbers! My grandpa is rolling over in his grave🤭
