STORY OF MY FLOCK
*Starts with 2 hens.*
I want to hatch some chicks!!!
*accidentally wins a bid on eggs and rushes to buy an incubator*
5 chickens is enough!
*sees broody hen and buys a bunch of eggs*
Okay, 8 is enough!
*a place selling silkies for £10 each*
*buys one*
Okay that's enough
Oh no she's lonely! I'll get her a buddy
*buys another*
Okay, 10 is enough.
I want to hatch more eggs soon
*one chicken dies*
*rehomes two roosters*
I'm back down to 7 :(
I'm gonna hatch some supermarket eggs for fun. I'll throw in Pippin's egg too!

I'm definitely an admitted chicken addict!

Every time a sale at Ideal or Meyers pops up in my email, I have to try to ignore it, or simply delete it or I'll be in trouble with the husband! :lau
We had to expand to 2 coops now, and we'll be working on another one soon I'm sure knowing how it goes around here. But we replace our older birds with younger ones because we breed them. The problem is that I want all of the breeds, and its just not logical when it comes to hatching chicks and selling eggs because I would have to have enough to make a profit. :(

To further my addiction, I constantly have my incubator running, when I told myself June was the last month and I cleaned it well and put it in storage. Not 3 weeks later, I was hatching eggs again. It's a real addiction! Lol. But now I've gotten "stronger" and I sell the chicks before I even have to put them under the heat plate or care for them. Within 24-48 hours of hatching, all of our chicks are sold and the money goes towards the feed bill that is higher now due to all of my chickens.

I really do believe they need a cure for chicken obsession! I've gotten to the point to where I literally have a wish list on Amazon just for my chickens and treats and nice things to pamper them with. And they're all I ever talk about. And of course I wear cute/funny chicken shirts all of the time as well and have chicken decorations throughout the home. All I can ever think about is what I want to do next to make my chickens happier! Lol 😅

But really, it's an obsession and we need a cure besides cute fluffy chicks. 🤣
How do you market and sell your chicks?

How do you market and sell your chicks?
Right now we are just using Craigslist and Facebook chicken/livestock groups in our area to market the chicks for sale. I have a Facebook page that's a farm blog kind of thing that I usually post on then share it to the different pages. We live in a small town and it's hard to get a lot of them sold quickly. I also have put up posters in my local feed store as well as hardware stores and it helped out a lot for people who don't have social media, and that was my number one way of getting people on my chick list these past few months.

Next year we'll be NPIP certified so we will be selling eggs online and possibly chicks depending on what I decide based on research and stress.

So I was able to fight the urge to order. I put them in my cart, closed the web page, checked them again, closed the page, it happened a few times. 😂

To curb the urge, I made a plan for next year’s order. I ordered my hatching eggs & started making a list for my June chick order, & requested a few 2022 catalogs. Knowing there’s more coming makes it easier to say no, & gives me something to wait for!

I’ll have my vegetable seed and chick catalogs coming this winter to give me something to plan! (I also have a seed-buying problem but that is easier to hide as long as I get home before DH to get the package 😂).

What are you all doing to curb the urge? Anyone give in & buy more? :lau
Seed buying addict here! And yep get the mail first, lol.

Chick catalogs?!?! What?!

Chick catalogs?!?! What?!
I have 14 kinds of lettuce seed, 18 winter squash seeds & 12 tomato seeds. I share w friends & they are always concerned I won’t have enough to plant! Next year I am experimenting w some different types of peppers...but I digress from chickens! I think I like both because they are fun to nurture & grow & so many beautiful varieties to try! 😂
