I heard an odd squawking this morning, much lower pitched than the usual egg song or morning greeting sound I get from 2 of my 3 pullets. I went to investigate and found it was my 3rd pullet Fluffy, making the distinct noises. I had never witnessed her being really vocal before, and the sound was definitely different from my other 2. So can you recognize a hen by the sound of her voice, or do they all sound the same to you? Are the squawks different for different breeds? I have 3 EEs.

I've got one black sexlink that has a really, low, guttural voice. I can always recognize her conversations. The others are harder to tell apart though.

I have over 70 chickens and can recognize 80% of their voices.

Some of the Marans and Jersey Giants sound the same, but otherwise, the rest I can all say - "oh, so and so is crowing!" or "oh, so and so laid an egg!"

I can tell my six rooster's calls apart and 10 of my hen's calls from the rest of then. The rest all sound the same.

One of mine makes a certain noise when she finds herself separated from her best friend. Another makes a funny "PIP!" noise sometimes. My orpington (also named Fluffy) is the most vocal.

My Delaware has this low guttural sound. My GLW has the poster girl soft chicken cluck and the 2 RIR's are somewhere in between. It's hard to tell those two apart.

I have 1 hen that never grew out of a chirp. She is also the steadiest layer and the most human-friendly. I don't know whether it has something to do with the personality or not.
