There are very strict rules on labeling anything as organic. You do not have to be certified if you produce under a specific amount (don't recall the number, but it is far more than any backyard laying operation could possibly earn--on the order of a small commercial business).
However you must feed and care for your birds in a specified manner, and the cartons must be labeled as the rules specify.
I read the labels on feed bags, and have not been satisfied with the contents in organic feed. It is pretty much nothing more than corn, soy & the various additives to meet mineral & vitamin content. There may be other brands with a better quality of ingredients, but not the ones I have seen.
I keep telling myuself to have my own feed milled, it would cost about the same, but I would have to pay all at once rather than spreading it out by purchasing evey week or so
