Do you share your computer?

Schools have computers for the kids to use, so do public libraries as Southernbelle has pointed out.

I don't get why kids have homework on computers anyhow. Yes, I know it's the sign of the times, but no one under hmmm hmmmm ( in an effort not to offend), has decent penmanship or knows how to count back change.

Being in school myself, you would not BELIEVE how essential computers are. Some teachers will simply not accept work that has not been typed. One history teacher actually requires a laptop or iTouch/iPhone/iPad that you can word-process and access internet on. I have a laptop (an old Mac PowerBook, from 2003 yet still works perfectly [I got it, refurbished, 2-3 years ago]) that I bring to school often because I need to type during study halls.

That being said, I am the same age as your daughter and would NEVER smash a computer with my fist! Goodness. (Granted, I do threaten my laptop with the evil "force quit", but generally I just sit and scowl.) I agree — if she's that wiggy around computers take her too the library or something.

Of all the responses this one actually means the most to me. You have her perspective!! I appreciate your input! I know it is tough on you guys too, and I do not want to be unreasonable. Our relationship is delicate anyway, me being a step-parent, and things like this put more of a strain on things sometimes. Knowing how you see it and relate to the situation is PRICELESS! She is "wiggy" about electronics. She is VERY easily frustrated and lacks self control. Therefore, I do not trust her little wiggy self!!

Probably my #1 child rearing rule was, they must deal with the consequences of their own actions, because I have to, and that is how the world works. Obviously this means she does not get to ruin another computer, and must deal with letting assignments go as best she can. For me, that was between the teacher and the student.

NOPE..i dont let my foster kids use my computers..
I learned that lesson the hard way.. never again.
If my kids need to use a computer for school..they either go to the library or use the school computers.

This irritates me to no end! The kids always want to use my laptop to do homework then when I say NO....it's my fault if they don't get it done! It's my 'fault' if they get a bad grade! Here if they have study hall, they can go to the library to use the schools computers. There is always some reason why that wont work though!

The other thing that gets me...is how dare these teachers assume that kids have computers! When I was in school not everybody had typewriters (I was lucky enough to have a word processor..probably the first one ever made!

that shows my age!) so it was acceptable to hand write reports and such. Now, typewriters barely exist! Now, granted we do have 2 older laptops the kids can use. However, the very idea that I have to drag them out and boot them up (takes forever) just because some teacher thinks that all kids have computers at home is ridiculous!

we have 1 pc in the living room that was purchased last year. I am not computer savy. have not set the parental controls and do not let my kids use the computer...pretty much at all. if there is something that needs to be looked up or done then I do it, other than that I recently told my son's teacher (5th grade) that if homework was going to be sent home that required a computer, then time needed to be made at school for that to be done. MY compputer was not on the "school supplies" list. teachers can not expect that even all families have a computer. (i personally know many people who don't) It is not a requirement for life, and considering the REDICULOUS amount of childhood obisiety and obsessions with electronics kids have these days I think teachers should be incouraging kids to find their answers like we did. IN BOOKS. remember when you couldn't find the answer and you actually had to get up off you butt and GET ANOTHER BOOK???? (hope no one thinks I'm being an old fuddy cause I'm only 29, but it's really irritating, these times were in)

Just another suggestion, you could just get a cheap keyboard and plug it in to the laptop. I had an old one with some dead keys, and that's what I did. And for those frustrating moments, I used to have a foam hand that I could use to smack the computer (or myself) when one of us (usually me) did something dumb. I had to keep reminding myself that computers only do what you tell them to do!
Actually those are just suggestions. If she were mine, I probably would not let her use my computer either. Never used to let my son use mine because he was the same way. He got pretty good at scrounging used computers and making them work; now has an associate's degree in programming and works in IT.
