Would it be a terrible idea to go to a Poultry show if I have unvaccinated chicks in the house? I do not want to "catch" anything at the show. I know that all the birds have to be vaccinated, I just need to know if it would be safe to go?
Or if there are adult birds there tha have been vaccinated, can I buy them and bring them home to my unvaccinated birds? I would quarantine them for 30 days, but wouldn't they still be able to shed after that?
LMK your thoughts.
Thanks-Theresa

Depends. When you get back from the show, clean up and wash your clothes. I don't think the risk is that high. If you bring birds back, standard quarentine should be fine. I am not too sure about how long things are or aren't shed from vaccines. It would depend on what kind too.

I agree totally. I work for a vet, and with parvo (highly contagious), besides doing a bleach/wash immediately after contact, I would just go home and take off my shoes and leave in box outside to be hosed/washed later, then once inside, I would, well, for lack of a better term, strip, and put clothes directly in washer. Helps to have hubby, s.o., kids, etc, there with a fresh change of clothes! I never had a problem with bringing anything home, and I encountered everything but rabies!! (yuckie, btw).

Thanks so much for the suggestions. That is what we did exactly. Except I took a shower. Threw all the clothes in the washer, had everyone wash their hands up to thier elbows and then went on with our day. Left shoes outside.
I talked a to a few people at the show about all the diseases and most do no even vaccinate, they just have blood tests done. I honestly did not see any birds that looked or acted sick, but you never know.
Show poultry people are a bit different then regualr poultry people. I was a bit uncomfortable, but it was really neat to see all the breeds in one building.
