I wash every egg. I rinse them under warm running water. If they have stuff stuck to them, I scrub them with a soft scrubber I crocheted from a plastic bag.
I have a steady 85 - 90 percent hatch. I don't candle or toss eggs unless they start to leak because of a hairline crack that I missed while washing them.
I figure my hatch rate from the number of eggs I put into the incubator as to the number of chicks that hatch. (Including any unfertile or cracked ones).
I have only had 2 rotten eggs in over 7 years, and those were fertile eggs that I bought.
I know a lot of people figure their hatch rate from eggs that candled with a chick growing only.
I don't remember right off who it was, but one member did a test on washed eggs vs. unwashed eggs. Their results showed no difference in hatch rates.
