Do you wash eggs before placing them in incubator?

A.T. Hagan :

I washed and sanitized all of mine.

It seems to be the common practice of all commercial hatcheries.

....Alan.

And what is your hatching percentage?

Egg shells are so very pourous, I'd be afraid I'd add bateria that would ruin the egg's possibilities of hatching.

totally agree with the others-those turkey eggs are spotless and the BCM's do have some dirt on them but just use a dry washcloth to et the loose stuff off-otherthan that they are some gorgeous looking eggs! good luck

Admittedly this is my first hatch so I'll know next week.

Commercial hatcheries achieve a very high hatching rate though and they all sanitize their eggs. There is plenty of literature to be found on the net about this.

I tell you. I've just had duck eggs that were a little bit dirty. Not very dirty kind of like yours. You have to mist duck eggs once per day in the incubator and I now notice an oder. The humidity and spraying just brings it out. Next time I will wash them. I've read in a book from Holderread that it is fine to do so, but you may have to keep your humidity 10% higher, if you do that with duck eggs. He does not raise chicken eggs, so note about that. I would put them into luke warm water for a minute and then gently pad dry them. That may be all they need. Do not roll them to much around and don't rub them dry. I think the betadine idea is good, it slightly disinfects them outside.
