Last year i had four dutch chickens that didn't roost shortly before they started laying eggs in January. (5 months old ). The roost where close to the nesting boxes and just a few inches (3-4) from the bottom.
This year I had natural breed and other circumstances. The young chicks learn from the mothers, and this spring I made 2 roosts/braches 2 feet (60cm) from the floor in a covered run. The chicks loved it.
As soon as these roosts where ready the chicks moved from the nesting boxes to the new roost (9 weeks)
A strange thing happened when we where on a holliday, . When we came back I had 2 hens that got broody. The 2 hens lay in one nest with a couple of eggs and one hen slept in the other nesting box with all 6 chickens.
To make them un-broody i closed the coop for the night and they all went back to the branches in the covered run. Withouth any problem they sleopt on the branches again.
