We stopped by the vet today since we've noticed our drake eating less of the bagged feed compared to what he used to. He'll stand by the dish and watch the girls gobble it down. This has started within the last week. He has no issues eating treats from our hands. The vet's assessment was that he is in good body condition and acts otherwise normally. He said that sometimes drakes will have such a rush of hormones that they have less drive to eat, somewhat like what happens in deer.
I don't doubt his opinion, and but I wanted to see if anyone else has ever noticed this with their males during breeding season. I find it odd that none of my reference books mention it. Regardless, we will keep an eye on him, as we don't want him to starve himself.
