Do your hens dig like crazy?

We have the crater look as well. They are using their holes for dust baths. And usually the holes don't get much deeper than 4-5 inches. As for the gardens, we have friends that use homemade chicken tractors and put them in the rows between the plants and they just move the long narrow chicken tractor into the next space the next day. They only have to weed under the plants. It's really neat!

This is what I do to keep the chickens from digging up bushes and small trees--lay large flat rocks around the base of the trunk. It also acts as a mulch too. I like the sandstone type the best because they don't fracture like slate and leave sharp edges to injure chicken feet.
Some landscape places sell rock by the pound and the selection is usually pretty good.

I also put large river rocks in my big flower pots because my chickens try to dust bathe in potting soil.
