Does a pvc waterer need nipples or cups?

Trying to choose a waterer design that will work for us. I liked the pvc designs as it will allow me to fill from outside the run and not have to drag hoses/buckets in and out. I'm not very technically savvy, simple is best for me. Can I do a vertical pipe that won't require nipples/cups like the feeders I see? I don't see too many pictures of those, maybe there's a reason.

I've been looking around for articles/discussions that compare different watering systems/options. Has anyone seen anything that can give me more info?

Either will work.
I believe it was @aart posted a couple links on the benefits of using horizontal nipples. Maybe aart will chime in here?

I don't think so, as water doesn't move the same as feed.
I believe that a waterer has to be sealed either on the bottom or the top.

Can't recall ever seeing a PVC waterer without nipples or cups.

Okay. I watched some videos on how to make a pvc waterer with a cup and it doesn't look to difficult (even for the technically challenged). @aart I'll look into your discussions on horizontal nipples and see if that would be better for us. Thanks!
