Hi!

A few months ago i rescued 2 chicks being pecked to death. they are now older, healthy, and happy! One of them, Ada, got peck so bad i think she might have permanent feather loss. I live in Michigan, so it gets very, very cold. Could that area get frost bitten? Should I buy/make A little hat? What can I do about it? I will get pictures tonight. Heres Adas head when I first got her.

The picture will help. Except for the feather loss, has she healed? If she has, then she will be fine. You might want to put some Vaseline on the bare spot. In fact, if it gets really cold you might want to put it on all your hens combs as well.

I doubt that a hat or any covering is needed. Chickens have, sometimes very large, un-feathered combs, they do fine without a hat. Naked neck or turken chickens have no feathers on their necks and almost none on their heads and they also do fine. Frostbite risk should be the same as for any of your other birds.

most of the feathers have grown back except for one spot. ill get pictures now. and yes, once or twice a week i warm up coconut oil and put it on everyone’s feet, combs, and waddles.
