What I mean is that I would never do it just to ridicule someone. The problem, when trying to help people, is that many people do not want to be helped. I have had friends from other countries who really wanted to learn our language and would ask me to correct them. Other people feel that they should be able to speak and write any old way they want and it's our job to try to decipher. I would not DARE to offer advice to such people.
Okay, good point and well said.
I do differ on those who think we should have to decipher them, simply because they have not made the effort to get it right. That strikes me as selfish and in that case I don't mind daring, although not insultingly.
Normally, though, I don't bother. Occasionally it is helpful to the discussion at hand to make a correction, especially when the wrong usage can lead to equally wrong conclusions.
Then I just do it in reply and not make a scene about it.
For all other cases, there is Firefox. And wouldn't it be cool if BYC had its own spell check?
