Does any one else wish BYC had spell check?

It doesn't need to be an English literature class for people to respect their own language. It DOES matter. I can't tell you how much time I scratch my head trying to figure out what the heck people are trying to say, between the barrage of abbreviations, misspellings, and lack of punctuation. You don't have to be an English Lit major to use the language they way they taught you in grade school.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't...

I was taught in grade school that you don't put commas before prepositional phrases when they're at the end of a sentence or before a subordinating conjuction.

And I was taught by my mama that it is rude to correct other people publicly.

I apologize that you find my opinions so threatening that you need to ridicule me in front of others.

You only make yourself look bad.

You're right; you don't ridicule them one a time; you ridicule them by the thousands.

I expressed an opinon, Joe. Deal with it. Disagree, and move on with your own life.

Firefox has spell check, and it works in BYC.
It's a free download, too. It takes a little getting used to, if you come from one of the other browsers. But spell check is there.

I personally believe that spelling counts. It's important to strive for your best, in even the small things, like spelling.
Out in the world, that isn't being taught as much as it used to... it's okay to be lazy in such things in the modern thinking.
But, I reckon we go to school to learn how to communicate, using one of the most expressive languages ever developed by man. On top of that, someone worked hard to teach you, for years on end. As if that wasn't enough, many people who matter - like employers - still respect a good grasp of the grammatical.
If you didn't pay attention, or had a problem which prevented your learning, then you can still work to correct that error.

Until you do, I believe the rest of us should make the effort on your behalf. We all benefit from the lesson. When I see a post that is really butchered, I will politely add the corrections in my reply. I don't call attention to them, nor point fingers, but it gets the point across.

I think it's worth the risk of being "mean," to help others get it right. And when all else fails, there is always Firefox!

With over 35,000 members of BYC, there is going to be a wide spectrum of education backgrounds, from people without much education to people with a PhD. Though I notice incorrect usage (I'm an editor by trade; I can't help it) I try not to be judgmental or let it distract me. However, I think one issue is that people (me included) often type quickly and hit submit. If you take just a second to read over the preview before submitting, you can catch mistakes if you know there are mistakes.

More distracting to me are the long paragraphs that don't even have periods between the sentences. I often give up on those. In short, if people can't spell or punctuate, that is not a problem with me, but if it seems that they just don't care that their post is a hard-to-read mess, I often move on.

I have spell check here!

If I mis spell, I get a red squiggly line under the word. Is it because I use Chrome? OR

Did someone make special provision for me?

Absolutely!!!!!

It's so frustrating when you are typing fast and making mistakes and can't see them because your mind is just going too fast. :-D

Spell check would be wonderful...we can only wish
