This is exactly what our Freecycle has turned into! Just yesterday someone was on there begging for a 3-wheeler or 4-wheeler! It makes me sick! It is the same group of people all the time asking for more stuff, often things like working laptops, computers, video games, Wii, etc.
And yes, at Christmas they post things like "I need this to give to my children for Christmas" and then they have a list of ten or twelve expensive items!

I think Freecycle should have a rule saying that you can't ask for expensive items, and for every time you ask for something you also have to offer something decent.

our mod on our local free cycle is great if you are to greedy she will let you know and if she feels like you are always asking but never posting she will also say something, she has really cracked down on no-shows too..if you have a no show you report it to her and she will jump all over it..no shows were becoming a problem

I think THIS is the answer right here....good moderation, NOT whether you are a "smart" freecycler (therefore weeding out the bad ones) or....well, the alternative. Our group is basically unmoderated. There are no enforced rules and is nothing but a bunch of people begging. When I lived in Anchorage, our group was awesome. I gave away a lot of stuff. I only got something once, a box of old cookbooks. The whole thing ran smoothly and there were rules that were enforced. You had to post a certain number of offers for every want you posted, you were limited to the number of wants you could post no matter how many offers, and you couldn't re-post your want for a long time. Here we get a want and a few days later an angry sounding message stating that they are STILL looking for that item and can't believe no one has responded.

I used to Freecycle but the modds for our freecycle are soo rude that I finally just unsubscribed , plus the same people posted the same thing everyday. I'll stick with Craigslist and the Free Shed at the ladnfill..

I tried to. For some reason my IP says I'm in Arizona. Despite me describing where I live, where my kids go to school, where my husband works, the Mod didn't believe me. Why would I go throught the hassle of signing up if I was two states away?! Honestly, not one of your brighter bulbs. Too bad, I was trying to give away furniture, because my parents have moved in with us for a year. Not to mention, my girls grow like weeds and most of their clothes are name brand. Oh well, my niece lucks out and gets bags of hand-me-downs each year. I don't like selling at yard sales, I'd rather just give stuff away.

I freecycle on occassion and have given away lots of stuff and have received a 50 pound bag of chicken feed and a car. The mods are difficult at times so I really like the free section of craigslist better~
