If you don't like your local FreeCycle group, perhaps you could start your own. Even if there's already a group for your state/county/town, you could start one for your neighborhood. Then you could moderate it, and you & your members could decide on the rules. There are several different FC groups in my area, some of them make it a rule that you must post at least one offer for every wanted post. Because that's the spirit of FC, keeping useful things out of the landfill, finding folks who can put your discards to good use. Like the dog owners who can use your stained bedspreads for bedding, and gardeners who want your torn lace tablecloths & curtains to cover their fruit trees, etc. And most importantly, chicken keepers who can take anything and make a coop out of it!
The best thing I've gotten from FC is community. Getting to meet people in my neighborhood I would otherwise never have known, building those connections and meeting each other's needs.
I've also gotten lots of nice kitchen appliances, things like juicers, blenders & rice cookers, things other folks have that they never find themselves using. And I have a few people routinely saving their egg cartons for me.
I've given away a lot of furniture, things my husband was convinced no one would ever want, just throw them away, he said. But I posted them anyway, described every flaw, and found a number of people glad to have those pieces anyway.
Our area FC also has a few sister sites, a Bulletin Board where folks can post about community events, and a Garage Sale site where you can post items $100 & less. I started a group for my area that's like a FreeCycle for plants & gardening items, we trade seeds, cuttings, tools & advice.
