I have a problem with people killing their roos just for being mean.

I wouldn't kill my roo for just being mean...its in their nature they can't help it their driven by hormones to protect their hens.......mine is aggressive, I just don't let him out around kids and I watch my back.....so far I only get rushed I keep a big stick with me and keep my eye on him so far i haven't been spurred by him it months...he is good to my girls and thats ALL that matters to me.

I think you should cull all mean birds. Hens and Roos alike. Im not into furthering aggression in lines through breeding but thats just me.

I also agree too many nice roosters out there to put up with a mean one.......
Do you know how many roos are killed every year just because there mean? I would guess its a very small percentage, over how many are raised for meat or killed because the hatcheries have too many. Put your Meany in a pot, then you have less stress and worry. All hormonal males can get cranky, but if it's a habitual thing too much hassle IMO.

Not trying to be mean, just stating my opinion...I don't agree with this at all.

If I had a rooster and it attacked one of my kids it would be gone in a heartbeat. There are too many nice ones that need homes. I'm sure if he got one of your kids you would feel differently...

We all have different goals and priorities. In addition to eggs and all the other fun things with breeding them, I raise mine for meat. I often have to decide which one I am going to process next. Sometimes one gives me a good reason to choose them next. I do not enjoy the killing part, even with a mean rooster of a bully of a hen, but I do it and do not feel the least bit guilty.

Others have their own goals and reasons for doing things. I personally put the safety of people, especially small children, pretty high. I don't like my visitors being attacked either. I don't want people to be afraid to go outside. There are so many good roosters out there that I don't see a good reason for a lot of people to put up with one that is aggressive toward people.

If you have goals where you need that rooster, then that is your business. Just understand the risks and accept the responsibility. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to keep an aggressive rooster, a breeding program just to mention one.

I do think a lot of juvenile roosters are killed because people either do not understand how chickens mate or the rooster in his adolescence is harder on the hens than he should be. Many, not all but many, of them will grow out of that if given a chance. But I think that any rooster attacks people needs ot be replaced as long as your goals allow. But that is my personal opinion.

It seems you recognize the potential risks and are taking the right steps for you. That is your decision and your business. I certainly do not fault you for that. But I also do not fault people for handling the potential problem in a different manner.

If I had a mean roo it would be someone's dinner, mine or the dogs. I don't believe in senseless killing but agression is not cool. Furthermore, if I can make use of said agressor in a different manner then it's even better.

Hello-

Personally, I won't keep a mean rooster, which means re-homing one with warnings to the new owners, or sometimes, I have to cull. I really enjoy my chickens, and I don't want to be stalked and attacked everytime I turn around.

If you like to keep and care for an agressive rooster, that is fine, but I don't. Same goes for mean hens. I dont' keep them either.

Makes for a nice peaceful flock.

Everybody has different views and that's OK.

I, too, will NEVER keep a mean rooster. I keep chickens just cause I enjoy it, and because I can make a little money on the side at the same time. I don't want to have to watch my back when I'm collecting eggs, refilling waterers/feeders, etc. Having a mean rooster takes all of the fun out of it. There are so many good roosters out there that are butchered, so why keep a bad one? My roosters are all very well behaved, and they take care of their hens too.

My neighbor had a mean Red Sexlink rooster for a while, who'd attack anyone. It got to the point where she'd carry a big stick, and only collect the eggs and fill the feeders once every few days, just because she was afraid of going into the pen with the rooster. And she'd fill the water bowl with a hose through the fence. I encouraged her to get rid of him, but "he looks just like my pet rooster when I was a kid." I'd try not to roll my eyes, because you all know how easy it would be to get a hold of a few - thousand - more Red Sexlink roosters.

But then last year she tried free-ranging her chickens, and her hyper Border Collie put an end to that rascal... Unfortunately the dog got several of her hens too, but at least that stupid rooster is gone.

She got a White Crested Black Polish rooster chick this year. Lets hope he's a good rooster!

I have a disproportionate number of roosters in my flock ( for the numbers of hens) and yet I don't have any mean ones. Well, there is the hyper-vigilant, feisty and occasionally obnoxious little Silver Sebright roo, George, but he's just protecting "his" hens. He's the only one who has ever flogged me or any visitor. All 8 inches of him.

All the other roosters defer to me, or the dominant roo, Carl, a magnificent EE. And he defers to me, too. Carl or Alex, the other Silver Sebright roo will kick George's butt if they see him aiming for visitors' or my ankles.

The rest of the roosters are big wusses, even the bantam Brahma and bantam Cochins. And, definitely, the huge JGs! Not a mean bone in 'em.

I must be terribly lucky - especially with such a large rooster/cockerel population.
