What kind of chicken is best for me? Soon I will be living in England or Whales. I need one that can handle cold. But also a chicken that can handle the heat of summer. In England or Whales, I've been told that it's "never freezing, never burning". Also I don't want a flighty or shy bird, I would like a social chicken. And also as much eggs as as possible. And I need the best mother instincts possible, and frequent broodiness to match it. That is my vision of the "perfect chicken". I am hoping somebody will have an answer.

I am partial to Orpingtons. They're a dual purpose chicken. I believe they lay pretty well, they're pretty broody, do quite well in cold, and originated from England. They're very personable and docile. Even the roosters are less aggressive. I absolutely love my Orpingtons. Hope other people have some opinions for you too.

Wales.
Wouldn't frequent broodiness and as many eggs as possible be opposites?

I vote for the Orphingtons too! They lay plenty of eggs when they are not broody, but make good mothers when they are. Since they originated in England, they are suited for the climate. They are also fairly docile chickens.

Guess what? I looked into Orpingtons doing a little bit of research, and they are perfect! Thank you very much!

IF you want a lot of eggs, and a broody hen, I'd suggest that you do a mixed flock. I'm partial to a mixed flock, and even if i found the absolute perfect bird, I'd still have a few birds of an other breed (or 3) to fill out my chicken boquet. I just love the varied colors in a mixed flock and egg basket.

EO Basque, friendly, good in heat or cold. From Spain. One of the best birds around. We are just getting them to the US in the last few years. But so wonderful. Try to check out the Basque thread on here.
