does anyone do 4h?

Unfortunatly you are not alone. There are alot of 4H fairs out there that have a very small poultry project. Alot of that is due to the people not trying it because it is small and no one knows anything about it. In order for the project to grow, more 4Hers have to sign up for the project. In my oppinion the more variety of birds that are at your fair the more interest it will generate. Even if you have the only silkies at your fair, they are different and maybe next year someone else will sign up and bring somemore birds and hopefully your poultry project will continue to grow.

As for the judges, most 4H fairs do not allow much money to pay judges fees. Example our 4H fair only pays $50 for a poultry judge...you get what you pay for in my oppinion. Lucky for us we have a Junior and Open poultry show also and it pays better for a judge, so we are able to have an APA judge for our fair.

If you have other birds, take more than one entry. As long as you have birds that would show in different classes. Our 4H show, you can only have 1 entry per class. Our 2 girls took 67 birds last year to the fair.

Our kids belong to a 4H club that is more geared towards rabbits and sheep. There is only 1 other family in our group that shows poultry. But we have a decent amount of kids from other 4H clubs that show at our fair. We get alot of phone calls from other 4H groups and other counties asking poultry questions. Unfortunatly you will have to do the leg work to find someone in your area that is knowledgeable in poultry. Maybe you can contact your neighboring county extension office and see if they have anyone that can help you.
Keep at it,
Christie:)

Are yours at the Southeastern Youth Fair? If so, which ones are yours?

My kids are really enjoying showing their chickens, so I am sure we will do it again next year!

Take care,

Kristen

this is my 6th year in 4H and 2nd year in poultry and im also the president of our poultry club. so i can also try to answer questions if you have them and need another view of the problem.

we have our own club for our poultry program, but we are not very large....theyre are probably 20 kids that do it but we are growing faster than when i started in 4H when we showed under a tent. we do have an APA judge, i think, but IMO he wasnt that knowledgeable...this happens in 4H

but if you have showed other animals...poultry is definatly a different expierence. i showed goats and dabbled in horses and poultry was definatly different but fun. i had more fun with my chickens than i ever did with any other animal because you have way more down time to enjoy the experience.

have fun with you 4H experience.

Ohh great info on this post.

Any idea on how old a child has to be, to show chickens in 4H?

**edited I left out key words LOL ! **

My oldest daughter has shown dogs, rabbits, poultry and goats for 13 years now. I became a leader about 7 years ago and I love it! My youngest daughter just became old enough to join as a cloverbud this year, so I guess I will be a leader for many more years!

We are fortunate to have a large and active poultry (in fact the whole small animal) program in our county.

Ah too bad ! We have some time before we can 4H in this house. My oldest is 4 1/2. I wonder if there are any 4H clubs that take little ones for other projects. I should start a post in a more suitable forum

Really, ours start at 7yrs old here for 4-H. We even have a children's fair nearby that allowed younger. I don't remember how young, but DD was 6 her 1st time and I know one of the other kids there was 5.

This is our 3rd yr in 4-H poultry. We didn't have any guidance our 1st year. Last year we went all the way to state. Planning even more for this year. Poultry is gaining more interest across our area clubs each year it seems. Our extension office says it comes and goes over the years and that's normal. As our club is losing most of it's more rural members (graduating) and gaining more city members (new youngsters) we should start seeing tremendous growth in rabbits and poultry interest. Those are all the city allows.

We don't have an official leader currently, but I expect I will be next year. I'm also looking into getting certified for poultry testing. They're hard to come by and I don't care for testing at the fair. We had the same judge at 2 of the fairs last year. He was really nice, but I seriously question his judging abilities. He made several really obvious mistakes. The kids had a great time though, so that's all that really matters to me.

Some fairs like ours, has open and Jr shows as well as 4H. Our Jr poultry show is for exhibitors age 8 - 18 and our open poultry show is for any age 1-100... Check with your county fair office to see what is offered at your fair.
