Does anyone do fires in their yard?

We have a fire almost every weekend out here.
After hubby returned from Iraq he decided to make a HUGE fire pit....3 1/2 feet deep....13 feet across... Then we lined the outside wall of the pit. We have 2 sinder blocks deep.
It's a crazy huge fire pit. Usually have a huge amount of people out every weekend. The 'Bomb Fires' as they have become known are pretty fun.
Had the 'Constable' out once. Told us if we were going to have fires that large we needed a burning permit. Even if in a contained pit.
We also burn lots of brush. Tring to clean out the property, and with 200+ years of family (not our family, but the family we bought the farm from) junk it's the only way to clean it up after the non burnable stuff is removed...
Will try and up load some pictures on the computer and post later..

We have a small fire pit in the field behind our barn that my nephew built. I am planning to put one up closer in th yard somewhere so I don't have to mow the area where the current one is located. Everthing from the back of the barn will be allowed to grow into meadow. (Most of it already is, except for the east fence line that is overgrown with wild black raspberry brambles and wild roses, I keep a strip mowed there so we can pick berries.

What are the dimensions of your fire pit, and what is it lined with? I have never built one before, and yours is exactly what I envisioned I would like mine to be like.

We have a fire pit - it was there when we moved in. Unfortunately (or maybe I should say fortunately??) we live next to a fireman who informed us that we need a permit if we ever want to use it.

I've been using the rocks to line the outside of the barn... so much for campfires!

Where I live we can burn anything anytime. No permit required. If the fire gets out you are responsible for any damage. If the fire department
is called you will be billed and required to pay for their time.
Real incentive to be extra careful. The only exception is a burn ban during times of extreme
dryness.
We can also call the local fire department and ask them if they are interested in having a training exercise at your place. Depending on what you have to burn and how big the fire will be. Most of the time they will say "Heck Yeah". Awww, the joys of living in the "DEEP SOUTH" and watching all
the folks flock to the scene. Usually ends up being a party at a controled burn site. The work gets done and we all have fun.

We can't burn anything. One- we're in the middle of a drought, two- we only have a volunteer fire dept, three- we live to far up the mountain so all we have is well water and that wont help much Four- IF THE FIRE DEPT IS CALLED YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL OF IT. so no fires at our house. we do have a bbq grill but that is it, bummer

I have a fire pity. I burn all the time. The kids and I will find down limbs in the woods to burn and then we will make smores. I will burn most of the summer. My Husband hates it because he is on the volunteer fire dept and thinks we will start a brush fire and he will be laughed at by his peers.

We have a small fire ring of rocks down by our pond DH and I use a few times in summer. It's legal as long as there isn't a drought burn ban in place. The DNR just want you to have water nearby just in case. We keep a 5 gallon bucket to dip in the pond.

It was nice last year watching the bats overhead eat the skeeters, dogs to one side hoping for treats, and even the ducks wandered onto the bank to check things out.

I think here we are supposed to have a fire permit, but as long as no one complains, there is no problem. We are so far away from people that any smoke that rises just looks like smoke from a fire place or a grill.

My friend has this awesome tripod cooking grill type set up. He brought it camping with us once and we cooked hot dogs and burgers. They were delicious! I would love to get one of those.

Has anyone ever tried Mountain pies? You make them in these cast iron rod type things, with a sort of pocket at the end. You put two pieces of bread in and pie filling. Then you cook them over the fire. They are DELICIOUS!
