Does anyone do straw bale gardening?

I have only did tomatoes on the bales in the past. I had moderate success. This year I am gonna try other stuff. Got the bales set up and starting to fertilize them. My past problems have been not getting the bales started soon enough and being able to water them with my well as much as I should. This year I have a rain barrel I am gonna try to use some.

How do you keep the chickens off the bales and away from your plants?

Just wondering if this is going well for those that have been able to start their gardens. We usually don't plant till the end of May here. I was not going to have a garden this year but DH wants a couple of tomato plants.

All of my SBG plans got put on hold due to our impending move to Maine. If things get settled down soon enough, I would like to try a fall SBG.
