Does anyone else get mad ....

Turn it around on them. Ask them why they think that? Put it on them to back up
their assertions.

KingsCall - It's a proven fact that a lot of chickens are as smart or smarter than most dogs!

Can you please provide evidence of this? I've seen this once before on another site
but cannot see how it is possible. How can a chicken, with a much smaller brain, be
smarter than a much larger brained mammal? My chickens amaze me daily with their
obvious high level of inteligence but I still can't see how they are more intellegent than
a dog.

My 6 chooks live in dog crates in my hallway. Guests are always amazed that they don't stink like they remember at grandma's farm.

As for them being smarter than dog's comment. Not sure, but they are most definately easier to train. I have a chicken that fly's a kite & another that pulls a miniature chariot in races. Both were trained using a food reward system, in less than 2 weeks. Never had a dog that could repeat tricks without at least a month of training.

Only when they toss around the "R" word. Redneck. But it's only a brief flash of anger when I realize I'm going to take it as a compliment, not an insult. Here in yankee land, the uppity folks look down on those of us that like rural living and all the trappings of it, including owning livestock. But then, I actually work for a living, not leach off a family trust fund or inheritance. I also do my own yardwork, home improvements, auto repairs, am a volunteer firefighter, all kinds of self sufficient physical stuff that the blue bloods pay someone else to do. I like just being a good ole boy living out in the woods. My wife used to say she'd never want to live too far out, but believe me, she loves it here as much as I do.

What is it the Harley-Davidson riders say? "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand."

I don't want to hijack this post with a variation of the old "dog vs chicken".
There are things some animals can do better than others and appear more
intellegent because of it. When someone makes the statement "It's a proven
fact" I like to see that proof. In addition, this is something I have read extensively
on and do not see a way to prove it either way.

My friends couldnt understand why I wnated to raise chickens, turkeys and pigs. But its nice to come home from a day of work and play with the critters. everyone shut up after the pig roast.

Galaxie Man- I used to have friends from Ney York who got absoutly P'd off when i'd call them southerners. (if you live south of Canada your a southerner)

"You can get eggs for .85 cents a dozen, why bother"

Uh, can you tell me where?? Here, regular old thinshelled, white eggs are $1.99/dozen. Don't even try to touch cage-free/organic/omega3/whatever else for that. My neighbor pays me $3/dozen for my fresh eggs. They're so yummy, they taste buttery without butter!

I dont even have any chickens yet but my friends give me a hard time mostly joking but also kind of jealous when i tell them of my plan, my gf and I just purchased a home on an acre we want more but it's was a start.

Anyway, people ask why i need such a big yard

and I tell them of our plan to be as self sufficient as we can. Thats where the chickens come in, i tell them we can have FRESH chicken and FRESH eggs all the time as opposed to the stuff they buy in the store thats been sitting for who knows how long and fed who knows what kind of chemicals.

Then i finish telling them of the plan to add pigs, solar and win power, bio fuel and pretty much not have to rely on anyone for food, water, or fuel

At reptile Gardens in South Dakota they have a coin operated machine. When you put your quarter in a door opens uncovering the window. The machine has a real chicken caged in it. You have buttons to push and the chicken has buttons to peck. It is basically a tic tac toe game. I saw several people wasting their quarters only to get whipped by a chicken every time.

I have some old friends and relatives that think I have taken a real step down in the world. Going from a RESPECTABLE business owner to full time farming and "having all those filthy animals". They have no idea what a STEP UP in quality of life it is. Their loss, not mine.

Luckily I live in a pretty rural area and people either had chickens themselves or are thrilled to find a source for "real" eggs from my chickies. Vermont is still quite a bit a farming state, luckily.
