Does anyone else hate 50 pound bags of feed?

I too use the 5 gal buckets for just about everything, Oyster shells, Grit, various other things that are small but not needed on a regular basis... and feed ;)
But I can lift and take the 50# bags, I just do it when I get home so things are stored neatly.

I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since I am by myself, several years ago I bought a collection of 5-gallon buckets from the feed store and would empty the bags of food into the buckets before I load them in my car. I put half a bag in each and this almost fills the buckets up but makes it so much easier to carry because of the handles plus is a great way to keep the food dry for storage. Then once I need more food, I just load the empty buckets in the car and repeat. So much easier on my back.
Pretty babies! There's just something magical about babies. You can't help but love them! :wee:love

I also dislike the 50 lb bags of feed. I also dislike having to pay twice as much, or more, for smaller bags. I only have 5 hens and it would take forever for them to go through 50 lbs of feed. Keeping it fresh long enough for them to consume it is also next to impossible. I did find 25 lb bags of scratch at my local Walmart. It's the same price as the 50 lb bag at the feed store, but since they are both only $6.95, I'd still rather have the smaller bag. It is very difficult for me to handle a 50 lb bag of anything!

FYI, be careful with scratch. It isn't a complete feed.

Even in winter a 50 pound bag of feed lasts me 4 months, but I give it all to my neighbors after 30 days for their pig. Now that spring is here/summer for you yankees they aren't even touching their feed. I don't know why I even bother buying feed.
if you bring a couple of plastic 5 gallon pails with lids i am sure you could get the people at the feed store to pure your 50 lb bag ito them . they would be much easier to store and move and the closed container would preserve the unused feed

Wow, I feed 30 (25 are in one pen, other 5 have to be kept in another pen) standard chickens currently and they go through a 50# bag of Purina Layena pellets in 4-6 days depending on weather and me being able to let them in fenced yard area. I give the 25 one 2 1/2 gallon bucket per day, usually they have only bottom of the feeder left come next day. The 5 a 1 1/2 gallon bucket lasts 7-8 days. I also have a banty and duck pen that get fed Purina Layena crumbles - 50# bag lasts 7-10 days depending on how much greens they get. Winter, they collectively go through about double or roughly 150 - 200# weekly. This spring I've got 23 (as of today) chicks that will be integrated into the pens in a couple months. I don't put my pullets in pens with roosters until close to laying age. Winter, I wish I could get bigger bags, but it would be to difficult to get them from vehicle to shed, we use a dolly unless snows on ground. I'm 20 miles from nearest feed store (only 1 of 2 in area) that sells brand of feed I use. When possible, I stock up 1-2 months worth - usually late fall in case I can't get out.

I guess I'm lucky. With year round grass and bugs(these thin considerably in our"Winter") and are purely free ranging with 4 birds on an acre.
