Is this the coffee maker sound? My roo does that.

My broody hen churrs. might be a growl, but she is a bantam and she doesn't peck when she does it, but her neck feathers rise up.

I have a little blue Amerauna and she growls everytime I open the nesting boxes. I wondered if she was broody but she's so young and she just growls. You wouldn't expect that of her, she's so tiny and sweet looking. Just don't open the nest box door.

I think its the other way around. the dino's are making chicken noises. After listen to my girls I think the movie sound guys spent some time recording chickens to use for the dino sound tracks. Besides after seeing what these girls will eat I for one am really glad there aren't any 800 pound chicken ancestors still roaming my little piece of paradise

One of mine has been growling constantly ever since the rooster died last week. Here's a video with the sound, I think she is looking for him. (they're pretty bedraggled because we had had third hen who was pecking these two and the rooster mercilessly, but we re-homed her).

edit to add: hope no one minds my reviving a very old thread (I just spotted the date after I posted)

My little Barnavelder Molly, if you open the coop door when she is in the nesting corner, you get growled at while she puffs her feather up till she's double her size. If you don't get the warning the first few times you get yelled at BAWK BAWK BAWK BABAWK!

Out of the whole flock of 3 I only have Big Mike (Big Mikehh) growl at me everytime I show up or feed her she sounds like a whining puppy growling . She's so cute when she does that she is already growing her
waddles so Im thinking she will be the first to lay eggs one day LOL. That is her on the left the black pullet not sure of the breed Im guessing Austrolorp but down
here in Texas ?

When our previous roo died, the alpha hen took over the rooster role- she was clearly in charge, guarded the place, growled and tried to cock-a-doodle. After we got a new roo and they sorted out their relationship, she returned to being a quiet hen.

We have a hen(Jenny) who is the Alpha hen of the group. She pecks everyone to keep them in line and sounds the alarm when the Chicken Hawk flies over. Last night when I shut the hens in their house she looked at me and made a growling noise. Not too much different than a dog only softer. Everyone thinks that I'm crazy. Has anyone else heard a hen growl or do I need to see someone?

Yes! Gracie growls. She doesn't bok or cluck, just this long, low growly noise whenever I stop handing her food, something is different in her coop or she is surprised by a bird flying overhead. I live right next to a wetland preserve so I get tons of fly overs. See someone? LOL That right there is funny! :p
