So, it seems like it’s been raining for far too long in North Carolina, but now that the weather is back to normal, I can get back to my evenings of sitting with my birds. I’ve gotten used to a few regular birds hopping in my lap or on my legs. The past couple days though, it seems like half the flock wants to roost on me. Common sense says that they all want to roost on me because I’m a dry, elevated surface. I like to think they do it because they love me. But today, my leghorn, Julia, took it to a new level... literally... She’ll sit and ride on my shoulder but my head was a new one. She stayed and slept for a good ten minutes until a hawk started circling and everyone got nervous.

Oh gosh! That’s a riot!! That is so great how much they trust you and how comfortable they are with you! My gals like to sit next to me.. on the arms and backs of my chair or a chair next to mine.. but that’s good enough for me .. especially when it’s very wet out!

Ok...
a) that’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen
b) I’m currently dealing with a hawk (or hawk family) right now. RIP to 4 of my babies today
c) down here in Louisiana, we had a nice entire day of non-stop rain. My chickens LOVE the rain. At first they act like they’re melting and go into their barn. Next thing you know, they’re out playing in it scratching for worms coming up.

Maybe they find comfort in you. That’s a good thing

The kids let the younger chicks sit on their heads, I keep telling them it's all fun till they are full grown lol. We raise our chicks in the house as pets until they are well old enough to go outside, that being said they all have their personalities and some more than others like to sit on shoulders. My daughter took a rooster that loved snuggling with me, it now seeks her attention out rather than being with her other chickens. It follows her around the yard, waits outside the door and even goes for rides in her truck.

What kind are they? I had to spend 30+ hours with my wood duck the first 5 days. It definitely paid off. Now the perch on my shoulder and love being handled.
They’re Rouens. I think we got spoiled a few years ago when we had pekins in our last flock. Those were the sweetest birds I’ve ever known.
