Does anyone else like homemade wine?

I've wondered about homemade wines for a while now. I finally decided that there are lots & lots & lots of people who are far better winemakers than I could ever be, so I simply contribute to their cause. WA and OR have some of the best wines out there, so I even get to call it a "local" product!

I loved the comment about "nothing has exploded". That's how I felt when DBF finished his work on our boiler. It's been several weeks now and the house is still standing, so... job well done!

When I was a young Immigrant Italian boy I used to visit my grandfather and I used to help him stomp grapes in our bare feet for hours. He made the best very strong homemade Chianti I have ever had, he would make 2 60 gallon barrels every year. I grew up drinking it my whole life as is a lifestyle for us, which continues to this day. I have not yet tried to make my own as my chickens are taking up all my time.

DH and I make our own Honey Mead, a honey wine. You can add different things for variation. We've made it straight as well as Hazelnut, peach...I believe he has made Almond before and we currently have two 5 gallon batches of honey mead, one is apricot and the second is Raspberry. We also brew our own beer on occasion (ales, not lagers). We've never made a grape-based wine, however...we need to try that!

And no dead chicken wines for us!

Does anyone have a receipe for tulapai? When I was a kid, the Indians used to make it; we never drank it because we don't drink. But I always wondered what they put in it. It sure did a job on them.

They made tizwin also, but it didn't affect them the same way.

Countryside magazine has some easy recipes for making home wines. My dad use to make elderberry wine every year. I remember us driving back country roads in search of the big white blossoms growing in the ditches like weeds. I'd get the pleasure of stirring the big drum of slop simmering on the downstairs stove everyday.

He's also made other wines using just frozen juice concentrate from the grocery store and actually didn't taste bad. He could make alchol out of anything I think, lol.

My wife, Anne, drinks wine, and many of my friends and relatives do too. I have never understood why. To me wine isn't much different than coolade unless it's distilled and turned into BRANDY. Other than that, I'll take whiskey, Scotch, gin, rum... i.e., just about anything but wine.

Im not a big fan of wine either. I just bought a bottle today from a local vineyard, it is a sweet table wine. I do not like dry wine at all. This wine is okay, but just not a fan. I agree with joebryant, more a fan of whiskey, scotch, etc.,...
I tried the wine for health purposes,..I think Ill just drink the grape juice!

I had some over-the-top pear wine at a BBQ once- it was a fabulous homemade wine, by some folks in Cedar Park, TX. I still wish I had some.
