Does anyone else own a deaf dog?

I joined the deaf dogs group when we got Koshie...they're sooooo helpful. Great info!

My oldest dog Kodi has lost her hearing completely over the last 18 months.
We use the vibrating training collar, but I have been known to resort to throwing objects in front of her to get her attention.
I also trained her that the flashing porch light means TREAT. It saves ALOT of time waiting for her at night.

Also it was suggested that you add DEAFNESS to the dogs permanent ID.

A shelter tech told me that deaf dogs are more likely to be euthanized because they often fail temperment testing.
I would hope that she never wanders and ends up at a shelter, but what if we are on vacation and the house-sitter doesn't know all of the places to look?

Collar tag:

Hi, I'm Kodi and I'm deaf.
Please call my owner ASAP.

You can also add it in the remarks section of the microchip registration.

Our soon to be dog is microchipped, is this something that has to be coded in, or just the info they put into the system... I KNOW nothing about micro chips, other than they are very tiny LOL oh and that they can be read with some kind of wand like gizmo (had to have an officer read one once so we could locate the owner of a stray), other than that I'm clueless.

(course me being clueless isn't all that unusual, just so you know! )

We've got I'M DEAF on Koshie's tag also...didn't even think about adding the info to her microchip. I also found a site that does vests, collar covers, bandanas etc. for deaf/blind dogs. I got her a collar cover which she's since destroyed so I have to order another. They're yellow with I'M DEAF printed in big red letters. They also make donation dog vests for adoption and rescue organizations. So much stuff!

She's also learned that if she doesn't look at us, we can't scold her because she can't see us scolding her by signing NO.

Now, that is a smart dog!
Many years ago I had a chow/shep that lost his hearing due to old age. Our backyard was fenced in so I let him go outside for potty breaks at night. When I wanted him to come in I would turn the back light on and off.
Now our very old Aussie has lost his hearing. The plus side is that he used to be terrified of lawnmowers. They don't scare him anymore. What does bother me is how soundly he sleeps. He has scared me quite a few times by laying so still that I thought he was dead.
