If you could grind the stems before offering them, that should help. I don't know anything about hay cubes - I imagine that this is a ground product.
Feeding hay to experienced chickens probably presents little or no danger. But, some of them will try to eat most anything especially if there's a fight over it.
Watching my pullets fight over a rubber band is entertaining. Hosing down the poop on the lawn after free ranging sometimes yields surprises
