Does anyone have a NICE adult rooster?

Of all the breeds we raise none of the roosters are agressive. I have noticed with our RIR's the roo's are very protective. If I pick up a hen and she squawks they come running to see what is going on. They don't attack but I don't back down either and I think that makes a big difference.

Eddie is our biggest chicken we have. When I go outside, he follows me around everywhere I go. He kind of makes me nervous because he stays right on my heal, but he's sweet..when our polish rooster tries to attack me, Eddie chases him! Anyways, he's pretty huge..I will have to take a pic of him next to a hen in a little bit

We only have one roo, Prince, a 2 1/2-y-o WCBP (who was Princess for 4 months). Unless I'm doing something that he deems threatening to his girls, he follows me around like a puppy. Sure, he pecks my toenail polish and does his mating dance to me on occasion, but otherwise he's a perfect gentleman. (OK, once in awhile he jumps up and spurs me, but then I pick him up and walk around with him till he's calm.) Loves being plopped on my lap for a nice back-scratching, and purrs all the time. He's such a joy to be around, and he's gorgeous!

When he is around me or my daughters, he's very protective and gentle, but if my husband shows up, he attacks. I can live with that, and I can't really blame him. Refusing to believe he ought to pick him up and let him know who's boss, the man swats him away or pushes him back with his foot. I feel that he has earned the position of Official Threat. The rooster is a keeper.

Like the others, I have a wonderful roo too. He is very nice to the ladies and keeps them from pecking each others chicks. He's not particularly nice to me if I have to pick him up, but he's never come after me, and rather prefers to run than fight me. He's also very good at keeping the ladies in the yard.

Nope, nothing you can do, you should just give up... did I mention I was a motivational speaker? O.K now that my lame attempt at a joke is over I'll try to give you some advice. It's not about nice, it's about dominance and submission. I recently read an article on a good way to dominate Roo's. Basically in addition to holding them, while you are holding the Roo, take his head with your fingers and hold it down in a submissive manner. It will probably take more than one try and several sessions, but once they stop raising there head, they have submitted, from what I understand of the procedure. Anyways, Problems with pack animals usually arise when you are not the one in charge, be the Alpha, and all should be good. Just my 2 cents.

ALL of my roos are nice (I have about 10) with the exception of 1 EE roo that my husband "saved" from a friend...he's a complete jerk and has bloodied my leg twice. He will be going to the stew pot as soon as I have time to deal with him. My other roos (EEs, Cochins, Silkies, Marans) are all very sweet. I did have 1 white Silkie roo who thought he could spur me whenever I went in the pen...he's no longer around.

growing up I had 2 RIR roosters, they were pussycats....I loved them. I have read that they are or can be an aggresive breed. I now have Partridge Cochins and the roosters are Wonderful, also Salmon Faverolle and he is good. I would say get a Cochin if you want 100% calmness. I had 3 Cuckoo Maran Roosters and each time I would turn my back 2 op them would attack me. so guess what, they are looking down on me now write this e-mail to you.
