Does anyone have Buckeyes?

I am looking for Buckeye chickens also. I tried sandhill but they are sold out for all of 2008, already. I may have to go to meyer hatchery. that is where mdbucks got his.

Ummm, not sure who you're taking shots at here....
but sorry about your friend being banned and thank you for no help.

MDBucks got banned? When did that happen?

Sorry to be off topic.

ON topic:

I think you would be better to find a breeder or get some from Sandhill. I think there was another post somewhere a while back where someone got basically RIR instead of Buckeyes. Good luck

The RIR instead of Buckeyes came from Ideal order. I got mine from Meyer, and though not as large as I would like they are definately Buckeyes and not RIR. I think it would depend what you want them for, if just to have that breed, meyer is a good choice, in fact getting from a reputable breeder doesnt get you a high quality bird, if selling you day olds, you might get something good/great, or a bird that the breeder would not want to keep for himself. Also how much are you willing to pay for Show Quality, if breeder has raised and knows bird is truely quality, do you think it will be cheap??

Buckeyes are raised to be good quality rather than bred. In other words, environment is as important if not MORE important than genetics with Buckeyes.

Buckeye Chicks need a higher protein starter feed (30% is best but at least 18%) than a lot of other breeds if you want your birds to grow to proper size. There seems to be general concensus also that feed with exclusively plant protein is NOT as good as feed with protein derived from both animal & plant.

Buckeyes grow and thrive if given more room, sunshine & always fresh water, of course. They are very good foragers and although they will tolerate confinement, they do not seem to thrive as well.

I have also noticed that my Buckeyes are my least aggressive birds with the other chickens. The hens will occasionally get in a little skirmish but they never pick on each other or the other chickens to the extent some of my other breeds will do.

By "good foragers" do you mean they will tear up everything in their path? I have some Red Stars that were miners in past lives, they're like little rototillers.

I was thinking of buying some from Myers for the pea comb!

I was disappointed this winter my Cochins & Rocks all had a touch of frost bite but, my EE & Brahmas pea combs were in great shape!

So, how long should they be on 30%?

Yes, that is part of it. Mine also even stalk and eat mice.

Until they start laying or AT LEAST to about 20 weeks of age.
